As summer approaches, parents everywhere are thinking about how to keep their kids active (and off the couch) for the next few months. If we’re honest, we’re trying to keep ourselves off the couch too! Here are some ideas to keep you and your kids active this summer.

  1. Go on a walk together after dinner. Have everyone help with the dishes and then take a walk together as a family. The cardio-vascular exercise of walking strengthens your hearts and lungs. And because it’s low-impact, it has a low risk of injury. Vary the route and get to know more of your neighbors along the way.
  2. Take them to the pool. If you have a pool, or have access to a neighborhood pool, take your kids there. Swim laps while they play, and maybe they’ll even join you in the lap lane! It’s a total-body workout, and moderate swimming can burn 500 calories in an hour.
  3. Go on a bike ride. San Antonio is becoming more and more bike-friendly, and you have lots of options now. Take your bikes and hop on one of the Greenway Trails http://www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec/greenway_trails.aspx These trails are expanding all over the city. It’s a safe place to ride with kids, and you can enjoy nature while feeling the breeze in your face. No bike? Rent a B-Cycle from various locations around town. https://www.bcycle.com You can explore different parts of the city and then return the bike when you’re done.
  4. Set up a front yard game of kickball and invite friends over to play. You need little equipment, no real sports experience, and your kids can make up the rules as they go. It improves agility and burns calories. Finish it off with a run through the sprinkler!
  5. Enroll them in a class or camp this summer that focuses on physical activity. There are many options in San Antonio for everything from soccer to martial arts, from golf to dance.

Have your kids tried CrossFit?

If they haven’t tried a CrossFit Kids class, they’re in for a treat. It involves a wide variety of disciplines, from gymnastics to calisthenics to weightlifting. It develops them emotionally, and it teaches them that fitness is a lifestyle.

Mission CrossFit Kids summer season runs from July 6-31, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30-10:15am. This is at the same time as our Women’s Only class, so moms can get their workout in too. Make sure to take advantage of the special for moms who are not current members.
