Athlete of the Month

Athlete of the Month

All of us who work out here at Mission CrossFit SA train hard. We are all on our own journey in pursuit of a higher level of fitness, health and ultimately, life. It is not an easy journey, but it’s worth it. It requires hard work, sweat, discipline, and perseverance. The journey is filled with challenges, obstacles, and sometimes-even setbacks. And although every person’s road is unique, it is not a solo endeavor. We are in the pursuit of fitness together. Like a team, when a person is knocked down, the group responds by picking them up. Equally as important, when someone succeeds, their accomplishments are enjoyed and celebrated by the whole. To that end, every month, one person will be recognized for their outstanding achievements in fitness, whether they are in or out of the box.

This page is dedicated to that individual who portrays what CrossFit is at Mission CrossFit SA. It is someone who pushes hard, never gives up and wants to accomplish something each day they step foot inside our gym. They are chosen by their peers and lead by example. The athlete doesn’t necessarily lift the most amount of weight, or win every WOD, but instead they have passion and desire for what their individual goal is. Work hard, everyone is always paying attention, and you could be next!

February 2015 Athlete of the Month – Lacey Reinhardt

Congratulations to Lacey Reinhardt!  She has been voted by the coaches as this month’s Athlete of the Month!  Lacey is one of those athletes whose dedication to her fitness has paid off in many ways.  As you can read in her story below, she has made huge strides in the gym that has led to a new confidence that many of us find after proving to ourselves that we can accomplish much more than we ever imagined.  If you see Lacey around the gym (usually at the 8:30 and 9:30 AM classes) be sure to congratulate her.  She’s put in a ton of work to earn this honor and is certainly deserving of the title “Athlete of the Month”

Story:

Walking into mission for the first few times and witnessing ALOTO 2014 very soon after, gave me something that no other fitness facility could…Proof! Just look at the incredible members and coaches, their physique and their mentality. I knew in my heart that becoming a part of Mission’s community meant I was going to inevitability change in the direction of my long standing goals. A year later I’m a new kind of strong; new weight, new size, new muscles, new confidence. Mission is the gift that keeps giving. I’m committed because I know every rep is an opportunity to be even more proud of myself. I’ve spent most of my life wanting, hoping, negotiating, starting, and stopping a plan towards being fit. I have everything I need now, the community, a partner with the same goals, healthy social setting, and now I am my own proof! Thank you so much for the recognition, it means a lot to me.

Story:

Even though I started at Mission Crossfit on Nov 4, 2013 I had begun my transformation 2.5 yrs prior. I weighed 467 lbs (body comp was approximately 100lbs muscle and 370lbs of fat) in Spring 2011. I needed a kickstart and got a Gastric Sleeve (my stomach went from the size of a small pizza to the size of a banana). The surgery only helps for one year, it’s what you do after is your real transformation. So I began a hitting the gym about 3-5 times a week and was doing everything on my own for those 2.5 years(2011~2013). Finally I got bored with it(body comp was 180lbs muscle and 120lbs of fat) and quit going for 2 weeks.

I needed a change and my family friend from High School(Mike Lynd) recommended me for Mission. I met Drew/Nick in Summer 2013 and felt no pressure from them to join, it was a casual offer. I eventually joined Nov 2013 and began embracing all of the activities that were offered. Steph was my Elements trainer and I eventually started working out at the 5:30p class. Depending on my work schedule I now do a combination of evening and the 12noon classes. I believe I have taken a class by every single Mission Crossfit Trainer

This year the doctors told me I weighed the same as last year(300lbs) but my body comp was 210lbs muscle and 90lbs of fat). Crossfit has transformed my body and I am only one year in. I continually set the bar high to get me to that next level, I can’t wait to see what this year brings me in terms of my fitness goals. I have been blessed by the comradery and the encouragement that my crossfit family has given me. Like my friend Alex Garcia(also a Mission crossfit member) says, “It’s a TRIBE mentality, everybody wins”

December 2014 Athlete of the Month: Pam Flores!!!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”true” align=”left” margin_bottom=”0″]

Congratulations to Pam Flores, our December 2014 Athlete of the Month!  Pam joined us about a year ago after her daughter, Alicen had been coming for quite a while and finally convinced her to give Mission CrossFit SA a chance.  Since the day she’s joined, we’ve seen Pam accomplish SO MUCH!  She’s overcome a sense of being overwhelmed by challenge of CrossFit and now not only completes every workout, but she attacks each and every workout with a fierce attitude!  Read more about her and her story below.  Congrats again Pam and keep up the good work!

NamePam Flores

Started CrossFit: March 2014

Favorite WODAny WOD that DOES NOT include a barbell.

Least Favorite WOD: Any WOD that includes a barbell.

Favorite Lift: Dead Lift

Least Favorite Lift: OVERHEAD SQUAT!!!

Story: I first walked into Mission in April of 2013, however I was only there to complete the paperwork for my daughter, Alicen who had decided to join the gym. I recall that the coach who assisted me with her registration suggested that I too should join the gym. I simply responded with “I would die. I do not belong in a place like this”. I have to admit that I was completely intimidated by the thought of doing crossfit myself. Alicen tried for months to convince me to work out with her at Mission but it wasn’t until a year later that  I finally realized that I had to change my lifestyle  and start working out in order to improve my health.

My experience at Mission has been amazing! The coaches have always been supportive and are great in the way that they explain the various techniques. They are wonderful at knowing how to modify the workouts for me while still pushing me to work hard. There is something about the sound of Coach Beth Gentry’s voice that forces me to push through the WOD even when my mind is telling me I’m done! The members have been so encouraging and are always willing to help. I am grateful to all the coaches and members for making me feel welcomed in a place that I was so sure I did not belong. The only regret I have is that I didn’t join Mission sooner. It truly has changed my life and I look forward to working hard to reach my goals!! Thank you!

October 2014 Athlete of the Month – Franchesca Palafox

Congratulations to Franchesca Palafox, our October Athlete of the Month!  Franchesca has been one of our most dedicated members over the past several months.  She rarely misses a training session and often gets extra work in before or after her class.  She recently competed in her first competition, Duality, alongside Alberto Arechiga and together they performed great for their first attempt at competing.  We certainly look forward to seeing Franchesca continue to make progress and improve as an athlete.  There’s no doubt she’s got the work ethic and talent to be a fantastic competitor!

Started CrossFit: January 2013

Favorite WOD: Cindy

Least Favorite WOD: Anything with snatches and rowing

Favorite Lift: Power Clean/Squat Clean

Least Favorite Lift: Snatches!!

Story: Growing up I have always been active and volleyball/track were my sports. I played volleyball on an intramural team at Texas State and was on a team in Austin. I wanted to explore and try something different, something on a whole other level and during my college years that’s when a very good friend of mine introduced me to CrossFit. I started working out with him for about 6 months in Austin before moving to San Antonio. When I moved here I was dying to find a box and one at a reasonable price. My cousin’s friend told me he worked out on M/W/TH at a place called Mission CrossFit and that it would work perfect with my work schedule. I joined in January 2013 under Coach Junior and fell in love right away knowing this was the place for me.

When I moved to SA I really didn’t know anyone and once I started at Mission I immediately felt at home and welcomed. All the coaches and other members were very helpful and welcoming. What keeps me motivated, is knowing that we do something different everyday which keeps me on my toes. I like how there is strength, skill, mobility and endurance combined. I have made so many great friends, have worked under great coaches and have seen myself improve since I’ve started here. I recently competed in my first CrossFit competition “Duality” and fell in love. I was able to push myself more than I thought was possible and I owe it all to the great Coaching staff, the other members/friends and my Duality partner. It’s been a blessing working out here at Mission and I look forward to see where the journey here leads me.

Started at Mission CrossFit SA: February 2014

Favorite WOD: Karen or Grace. Tough choice.

Least Favorite WOD: Any. AMRAP. Ever. Created.

Favorite Lift: the snatch! Shout out to an awesome afternoon Barbell Class 😉

Least Favorite Lift: The jerk. Mainly because of it’s name. Makes me want to really not like it. And I keep switching my feet when I land. I don’t know. It’s weird.

Story: A little over 3 years ago, I bought a Groupon for a month of Crossfit for my husband’s birthday, thinking “oh this might be kind of cool for us to try!” Best. Purchase. Ever. Day one we decided we loved it and never looked back. Globo Gyms were not for us anymore! I found a confidence in myself, my body, and my life that I truly believe I could not have found in any other community. I feel so incredibly thrilled to have found this Mission community and can’t wait to see more of what I can continue to accomplish with the support of my husband, coaches and friends that I’ve made in my short time here!
