Athlete of the Month

Athlete of the Month

All of us who work out here at Mission CrossFit SA train hard. We are all on our own journey in pursuit of a higher level of fitness, health and ultimately, life. It is not an easy journey, but it’s worth it. It requires hard work, sweat, discipline, and perseverance. The journey is filled with challenges, obstacles, and sometimes-even setbacks. And although every person’s road is unique, it is not a solo endeavor. We are in the pursuit of fitness together. Like a team, when a person is knocked down, the group responds by picking them up. Equally as important, when someone succeeds, their accomplishments are enjoyed and celebrated by the whole. To that end, every month, one person will be recognized for their outstanding achievements in fitness, whether they are in or out of the box.

This page is dedicated to that individual who portrays what CrossFit is at Mission CrossFit SA. It is someone who pushes hard, never gives up and wants to accomplish something each day they step foot inside our gym. They are chosen by their peers and lead by example. The athlete doesn’t necessarily lift the most amount of weight, or win every WOD, but instead they have passion and desire for what their individual goal is. Work hard, everyone is always paying attention, and you could be next!

June Athlete of the Month – Brian Fuentes

When we select our Athlete of the Month, we consider those who have an unmatched work ethic when they come in to the gym.  Brian fits this description perfectly.  He’s shown incredible drive since the day he walked into the gym and we’ve really enjoyed seeing him achieve many goals and continue to push on to improve.  If you drop in to a 6:30 PM class (or earlier since he rarely misses early work) be sure to congratulate him.  Great job Brian and keep up the good work!

Story:
I came to MCFSA with a fair amount of knowledge in terms of physical fitness (thanks to my time in the military), but I also came pretty out of shape since I had not maintained an active fitness regimen since my active duty days.  I was definitely looking to start working out again, and I started getting interested after watching Crossfit Games reruns on ESPN.  A few fitness enthusiast friends of mine urged me to try it out, so I emailed Coach Drew to set up my first class…on endurance day.  It was absolutely devastating.  I also knew it was exactly what I was looking for.  I could barely move afterwards, but I couldn’t sign up fast enough.  Through many months of hard work and determination, I arrived at the point where I was strong enough come to class everyday instead of just once or twice a week.  My results absolutely skyrocketed during the Whole Life Challenge last fall.  By combining my Crossfit classes with participation in the WLC at the prescribed level, I lost almost 14 pounds of body fat and set new (at the time) PRs for most of my lifts.  I credit Mission Crossfit San Antonio for helping me achieve my fitness goals, helping to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and providing an awesome atmosphere to work out in and be a part of.  I like the fact that coaches and athletes alike are friendly and supportive, and will go out of their way to motivate you or help you if you are having trouble.  Aside from being in much better shape than when I started here over a year ago, I think the biggest change has been in my mindset.  Instead of looking for a way to get out of working out, I’m now in the box at least 20-30 minutes early, getting in extra work before class.  Instead of wondering if I can even survive a WOD, I’m wondering how much of it I can do unbroken or challenging myself to keep up with the person ahead of me.  I’m thankful to be a part of this box, and I look forward to many more WODs and PRs!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR MORNING ATHLETES

WE WILL NOT HAVE WATER UNTIL AT LEAST 8:30AM TOMORROW (6/4)

We sincerely apologize to our members for this issue.   Unfortunately, we have no control over the situation. Plumbers came to fix an issue outside of the building and were unable to resolve it.  What resulted was the gym not having access to water for the evening classes this afternoon and tomorrow morning.  Apologies to those members who had to deal with the situation this afternoon!

What this means… We won’t have access to showers, water fountains, or bathrooms tomorrow morning until the issue is fixed.  Again, we apologize for the inconvenience but the issue is out of our hands.  We’ve tried to contact everyone possible to try and get someone back out to finish the job, but alas no one was able to help remedy the situation.

We hope the issue if resolved by 8:30AM tomorrow morning and we will be sure to keep you all updated.  Sorry again and we ensure you that we will do everything we can to get this taken care of at the earliest time possible tomorrow.

Athlete of The Month – May 2014

Name: Evita Martinez

Started CrossFit: January 2011

Favorite WOD: Bear Complex or Fight Gone Bad

Least Favorite WOD: Anything with DUs

Favorite Lift: Back squat or Deadlift

Least Favorite Lift: Snatch

Story:
I was introduced to Crossfit by my cousin Justin Rodriguez but was hesitant to give it a try but I sucked it up and started looking for a box close to where I live. I found a coupon on Living Social and showed up to a class. It just so happened that the WOD that day was “Fran” (of all workouts). I got my butt kicked! But even though I could not do a pull up or barely breathe and I could feel soreness, I was hooked. I signed up right then. After some time as I gained strength and endurance I started to outgrow the box I was at and went looking to find more, I talked to my cousin Justin and he told me he had moved to Mission Crossfit SA and that I should give one of the classes a try. I showed up to a weekend class and loved it! In the year that I have been part of the Mission family, I have gained more knowledge and understanding of the greatest sport there is. Also in that time I have found a new love, POWERLIFTING!! I requested to work one on one with one of the coaches and was matched up with Jeff. He brought up Strength Crew and I decided to give it a try. Now my new focus is Powerlifting and using Crossfit as a way to gain more strength. In the time I have worked with Jeff, I have gained a whole new love for lifting and lifting HEAVY! Not only do I have a family in Mission but I have a close knit family in Strength Crew. I’m looking forward to the future of Mission Strength Crew and kicking butt in Powerlifting!! 🙂

May 2014 Athlete of the Month: Evita Martinez

We’ve selected Evita Martinez as our May 2014 Athlete of the Month!  She has most recently rejoined normal CrossFit classes, but loves Powerlifting and was nominated by Coach Jeff as a standout athlete from his Strength Crew program.  Her work ethic in recent months has paid off tremendously and has been rewarded by many PR’s including 2 this weekend at Travis Mash’s Learn 2 Lift Seminar in the Deadlift and Bench.  Congrats Evita and keep up the good work!

Athlete of The Month – April 2014

Name: Ashley Rice

Started CrossFit: August 2011(I had a few week stint in August 2011 but I legit started in November 2012)

Favorite WOD: preferably with burpees or KBS

Least Favorite WOD: The Bear

Favorite Lift: Back Squat

Least Favorite Lift: Shoulder Press

Story: I initially tried crossfit and decided that not being able to walk properly for days at time just wasn’t for me. Fast forward a year and a half later… I found myself sitting at a computer eight hours a day with no physical activity and my bagel bite/Gatorade diet was far from “clean.” Luckily a few of my missionista friends convinced me to give it another shot and man am I glad I listened to them! I have met so many inspiring people at Mission, both coaches and athletes, that not only motivate me to be a better athlete but to be a better person as well. So excited for more PRs and more great people.

April 2014 Athlete of the Month – Ashley Rice

Congratulations to Ashley Rice who was selected as our April 2014 Athlete of the Month!  She’s an athlete who has seen huge improvements since her first day walking in the gym (especially considering we didn’t see her for a while after her initial stint at MCFSA, kidding!).  I’m sure if you would have told Ashley early on in her CrossFit days that she’d be involved and competing in a program that includes some of the best athletes at the gym, she would certainly call you crazy.  However, she’s doing exactly that and killing it!  Her technique has greatly improved and she’s been knocking down PR’s on a regular basis.  Congrats Ashley and keep up the great work!
